Real Photos = Real Connection: Why One Honest Image Can Transform Your Website

One of the simplest ways to make your website more you and more effective = Add one real photo!

Not a stock photo. Not a perfect, overly edited portrait.
Just a clear, warm, light-filled image that shows a little of who you are.

For small business owners, creatives, therapists, or hospitality hosts, this one tiny change builds trust faster than any amount of clever copy.

Let me explain…

Why Real Photos Matter

People do business with people.
They are not just buying your product, booking your service, or staying in your space. They are buying how it feels to trust you.

A real photo:

  • Adds instant warmth and credibility
  • Helps people feel like they are in the right place
  • Sets the tone before they read a single word

And here is the best part: you only need one to start.

Styling Tips: How to Use Real Photos on Your Website

1. Natural Light Is Your Best Friend

Whether you are snapping a photo with your phone or working with a photographer, use daylight.

  • Stand near a window or open door
  • Morning or early evening light is soft and flattering
  • Avoid harsh shadows or overhead lighting

A simple photo with natural light will feel more inviting and more you.

2. Keep the Background Calm and Personal

Cluttered backgrounds confuse the eye. Busy backdrops distract from your lovely face!

Use a setting that fits your business and lifestyle:

  • A corner of your workspace
  • Your front porch or garden
  • A treatment room, a kitchen table, or even a sunny spot outside

Let it feel lived-in, not staged.

3. What Makes a ‘Real’ Photo?

A real photo is one where:

  • You feel relaxed and yourself
  • You are not posing stiffly or trying to look overly “professional”
  • You are simply present being you: smiling, talking, writing, making, or just being

It might be:

  • You journaling with a cuppa
  • You welcoming a guest
  • You at your desk, laptop open, looking up with a grin
  • Laughing with a customer or friend
  • You carrying fresh towels to the gîte
  • You walking through your garden or town with a basket

Below are a couple of images I have used to that sum me up: my country life – my love of animals and having fun with my family.

Where to Put That One Real Photo

Here are 3 places on your website where that photo will really work:

1. Your About Page

This is a no-brainer. It is the most personal page on your site — people come here to meet you. A clear, friendly photo brings the text to life.

Tip: Add a caption or sentence near the photo like:
“Hi, I am Jane. I help women in business simplify their content and build calm, purposeful websites.”

2. Your Homepage (in the top section or halfway down)

Even just a small circular image in a corner, or tucked next to your intro paragraph, makes a homepage feel more grounded.

Tip: Match it with your welcome message or your value statement. Let the photo support the words.

3. Your Contact Page or Footer

Often forgotten — but this is where connection counts.
Adding a photo next to a friendly contact line makes it feel safe and personal to reach out.

Tip: Try a message like: “Got a question? Pop it over — I am here to help.”

Final Thought

You do not need 20 photos.
You do not need to book a photoshoot.
You do not need to look “perfect.”

✨ You just need one real, kind, light-filled image that feels like you.

Start there. That one shift can change how your website feels — and how people respond to it.
