The 5-Second Welcome Test: Is Your Homepage Doing Its Job?

Your homepage is your welcome mat.

But in a world of fast-scrolling and instant decisions, you only have about 5 seconds to help someone feel like they are in the right place.

I call it: The 5-Second Welcome Test.

This simple check can help you spot what is missing, what is unclear, or what is pushing people away — without you even realising it.

What is the 5-Second Welcome Test?

It is exactly what it sounds like.

Open your homepage and imagine a new visitor landing there.
Set a timer for 5 seconds.

Then ask:

✨ If someone glanced at this page for just 5 seconds, would they know…

  1. Who this is for?
  2. What you offer?
  3. What they are supposed to do next?

If the answer is “not really”, then it’s time for a gentle refresh.

Why This Matters

Most people do not read. They scan.
They are tired. They are browsing on their phones.
They are comparing options quickly.

If your homepage is vague, cluttered, or full of “fluffy” words that do not actually say anything… they will click away. Not because they do not like you but because they are not sure they belong.

And when people are unsure, they leave.

How to Pass the 5-Second Welcome Test

Here are 3 simple things to fix or check today:

1. A clear headline

Not: “Welcome to my website”
Better: “Helping women in business simplify their content and show up online”
Or: “A peaceful countryside gîte for families who need to switch off”

2. A short, human intro

Not: “I provide bespoke services tailored to your needs”
Better: “I help overwhelmed business owners feel confident with content that works – without the stress.”

Keep it short. Say what you actually mean.

3. A clear next step

Add a button, a link, or a prompt:
– “Book a call”
– “Check availability”
– “Browse services”
– “Start here”
Make it obvious what to do — and easy to do it.

Try It Today

Open your homepage and read it like a stranger.
Ask yourself:
– Would I feel welcome here?
– Would I know what to do next?
– Or would I click away?

✨ Edit just one line today. That’s progress.

Final Thought

Your homepage is not just about how it looks: It’s about how it feels.

If someone feels lost, unsure, or overwhelmed, they will leave.
But if you make it clear, warm, and inviting in the first 5 seconds?
They will stay. They will click. They might even become a customer.

Your job is not to impress. Your job is to connect! Quickly and kindly.
